Since 1125, when Dona Teresa, the wife of Henry of Burgundy, granted Ponte de Lima a royal charter, a large market, claimed to be the oldest in Portugal, has been held on alternate Mondays. Stretching downstream along the riverbank from the Roman bridge, it offers local embroidered linen, carved wooden furniture, blankets, rugs and wickerwork and also agricultural implements, wine barrels, fresh fruit, cheese and much more. On the north bank of the river there is a cattle market. Many stallholders turn up in regional costume.
