Borba, founded by Gallo-Celtic tribes, was conquered by the Christians from the Moors in 1217. D. Afonso II ordered the building of a castle and gave control to the Order of São Bento de Avis. In 1302 D. Dinis awarded the town a charter, which was renewed in the 16th century by D. Manuel I. The town played an important role during the 17th century in the Wars for the Restoration waged by Portugal against Spain. The last great battle was fought at Montes Claros, in 1665. The region produces high quality marble which is used extensively in the town.
