In Angra do Heroismo the City Hall (Câmara Municpal) is a majestic 19th century building built on the site of an earlier structure. Situated in the centre of the city, in Praça Velha, this building is worth visiting. In 1608 an earthquake caused enormous damage and, as a consequence, the building was renovated in 1610. The building contains many valuable works of art dating from the 16th century to the present, including the first flag of the Monarchy, embroidered by Reina Doña Maria II, a golden bell given by D. João VI and the golden keys offered to the Duke of Bragança in signal of submission.
