Moura’s conquest from the Moors in 1166 is closely linked to the legend of the Moorish maiden Salúquia, the daughter of the governor Abu Hassan. She was engaged to the young commander of the castle. Standing atop one of the towers, Salúquia awaited his arrival. However, the Christian forces had already killed him, along with his companions. The Christians put on their enemy’s clothes and tricked those inside into letting them in. On realising that she had been deceived, the beautiful maiden Salúquia threw herself from the tower that can still be seen close to the Jardim Dr. Santiago.
