Built in the 16th century, during the reign of D. João III, the Tower of Medronheira maintained surveillance over the coastline. This was one of several coastal defence fortresses erected along the Algarve. The strategic importance of the waters, and the need to protect the local population from marauding pirates, led to their construction. The Torre da Medronheira, just outside Albufeira, gives a good indication of how difficult protecting the populace must have been when the coast was under frequent attack.
