Praça do Toural is a beautiful square, which at one time held a cattle market, outside the city walls. In 1878 a railed public garden was laid down, with a bandstand, public conveniences, benches and street-lamps. Following the inauguration of the first Republic in the early 20th century, the public garden was relocated and the Toural redesigned with a statue of Afonso Henriques as its centrepiece. The latter was subsequently removed to the castle and replaced by an attractive fountain. The black and white patterned paving is particularly attractive and there are many fine buildings in the surrounding area.
