Torrão is a charming village located near the Vale de Gaio dam, about 30km southeast of Alcácer do Sal. Bleached white houses, with enormous chimneys, characterise its streets. The parish church has a lovely Manueline entrance and, inside, has 17th century azuelo tiles in the lateral chapels. Of the convent that once housed the religious order, only the belvedere remains. Torrão is the birthplace, in 1482, of Bernardim Ribeiro, famous for his poem "Saudades", published posthumously in Ferrara in 1554. He died in Lisbon in 1552.
