The ruins of Torres Vedras Castle stand above the town and provide a splendid viewpoint. It is thought that the Romans were the first to be involved in this fortification, which the Moors rebuilt and enlarged. After the Reconquest, the castle took its final shape under King Afonso Henriques. King Manuel I restored the castle in the 16th century and added the ogival entrance that can be seen today. Greatly damaged in the Napoleonic invasions of the early part of the 19th century, the walls have since been restored.
