Torres Novas is overlooked by the ruins of its 12th century castle, of which some walls, gates and 11 towers are all that remain. The city was recovered from the Moors in 1148 by King Afonso Henriques, when the castle was the scene of bitter fighting between the Moors and Christians. It was rebuilt in 1190 by king Sancho I and again by King Ferdinand I in 1376. The great earthquake of 1755 caused the fortress serious damage which was exacerbated by the Liberal Wars. The castle walls now enclose a garden.
