North of the Praça da República in Horta is another small square, known as Largo do Relógio. The square gets its name from the lone bell tower with a clock, the Torre do Relógio. This clock tower is the relic of an 18th century church which once occupied the square. The church was so badly damaged by the earthquake of 1926 that it had to be subsequently torn down. The tower is an interesting anomaly. Above the tower lies the pretty, small Jardim de Florencio Terra.
