The Torre de Menagem is all that remains of the castle of Braga and was originally the keep. Since 1910 the tower, and the few remaining sections of the medieval wall, have been protected as a national monument. Everything else that remained of the medieval citadel and castle was demolished in 1906. The keep dates from the reign of King Dinis (1279-1325) and is about 30 metres high over three floors. The roof is ringed with battlements and has a turret on each corner. King Dinis’ coat of arms is carved inside the tower and on the western façade.
