The Torre de Belem Garden was created at the time of the 1940 Portuguese World Exhibition on the site of the former Belém Gas Factory. It enhances the appearance of the Belém Tower, one of Lisbon’s most important monuments and is close to the Doca do Bom Sucesso. The garden contains the monument to the Portuguese soldiers killed in Africa during the Overseas War between 1961 and 1975. It also features a replica of the Fairey III D seaplane, commemorating the first Portuguese Atlantic aerial crossing in 1922 by Sacadura Cabral and Cago Coutinho, who took off from here.
