The town of Aguiar da Beira is located 13 km to the south west of Sernancelhe and was founded in 1120. Amongst its attractions is an unusual combination of structures on the Largo dos Monumentos Nacionais. The four storey battlemented clock tower was built in the 15th century and is a National Monument; it is assumed to be part of the original castle and has interesting gargoyles which were added later. There is also a fountain and a 16th century Manueline pillory crowned with an armillary sphere. The square contains the 15th century Magistrates house and the old town hall.
