Topo, surrounded by deserted, green-covered landscape, is the most important town in the east of São Jorge. A settlement since the arrival of the Flemish nobleman, Wilhelm van der Hagen, this was the place where development started on a large scale. For some centuries Topo developed into the unofficial capital of the island, due to its economic importance. There is much evidence of the town’s wealthier past, including some notable old manor houses, among which the beautiful 17th century Casa dos Tiagos.
