Housed in the cloisters and other rooms of the Madre de Deus convent, this is the only museum of its kind in the world and contains exhibits of tiles going back to the 15th century. It traces how tiles developed from the Moorish influence and came to Portugal from Spain. Particularly worthy of note is the blue and white mural giving a panoramic view of Lisbon, some 23 metres long and composed of 1,300 tiles, which dates from 1738 and is thus prior to the great earthquake. The museum is funded by the Gulbenkian Foundation.
