The Thermal Hospital Museum is housed in a building originally known as the Royal House (Casa Real). It was here that Queen Leonor (1458-1525), the wife of King João II (1481-1495), was treated with the spring waters and cured of a ‘long time wound’ where other treatments had failed. The exact nature of her problem is not known. She was the founder of the hospital and the museum’s collection consists of medical and scientific instruments and documents, from the 16th to the 20th century as well as paintings, sculpture, carvings, gold and silverware, religious vestments, furniture and ceramics
