Standing in front of the Igreja Matriz, with its imposing appearance highlighted by the garden in which it is positioned, the granite Pillory or Pelourinho is a landmark site in Barcelos. It is also known as ‘Picota’ to the locals and dates from the end of the 15th and beginning of the 16th centuries and was used for public punishment and humiliation. It is typically late-gothic in style and consists of steps, a base and a hexagonal column with a splendid multifaceted capping.
