The most important piece in the Palace Treasure Museum is the Cruz de Vila Viçosa (Vila Viçosa’s Cross). A stunning piece of great artistic beauty made between 1656 and 1673 by Filipe Valejo for the Duke of Braganza João II, future King João IV, it is said to have a relic of the Holy Cross inside. The exhibition holds more than 170 jewellery pieces, such as the cross of Catherine of Braganza and the Caravel cutlery case belonging to King Manuel II. In addition to other jewellery pieces, there are also magnificent paintings and Flemish tapestries of the 15th century.
