The Helmsman Monument ( Monumento ao Homem do Leme) is a landmark in Porto and is located in the Avenida de Montevideu by a beach with a garden of the same name. It is the work of sculptor Américo Gomes dating from 1934 and pays tribute to fishermen. It was, at one stage, regarded as one of the most important examples of nationalist sculpture in Portugal. The monument, depicting a man in fisherman’s clothes at the wheel of a boat, conveys a great sense of motion and the harsh reality of life at sea.
