Lagos is circled by walls constructed during the 16th century when it was the residence of the governors of the Algarve. The Porta de São Gonçalo, opposite Batata beach, was once a gateway into Lagos. Next to this is the Governors’ Castle, with its historic Manueline window, from where it is said that King Dom Sebastião attended open-air mass before settting sail to do battle at Alcácer Quibir. Enclosing what was once the city, stretches of defensive wall still remain. Under an archway through the walls is a small oratory dedicated to St. Gonsalo, patron saint of Lagos and fishermen.
