Originally a Jesuit church, the Church of São Roque was designed by the Italian architect Filippo Terzi and built in the second half of the 16th century. The plain façade is in stark contrast to the rich interior, which is one of the city’s greatest treasures and a major tourist attraction. When the Jesuits were expelled from Portugal in 1758 the church was given to the Brotherhood of the Mercy. The chapel of Saint John the Baptist was built in Rome for King João V, using the most expensive materials. After consecration, it was shipped to Lisbon and re-erected.
