The Praça do Bocage commemorates one of Setubal’s most famous citizens, the 18th century satirical poet Manuel Maria Barbosa du Bocage (1765–1805). His father held important judicial and administrative posts and his mother, whose name he took, was the daughter of a French vice-admiral. His satirical poems caused him many problems and at one stage landed him in prison. An early sonnet ‘The Decadence of the Portuguese Empire in Asia’ is typical. The 12 metre high monument in the centre of the square, is by Pedro Carlos dos Reis and was erected in 1871. The actual statue is 2 metres.
