The Carapacho thermal springs are located close to the sea. The thermal waters were discovered in 1750, and their medicinal properties gained fame in the Azores in the 18th and 19th centuries. The area around the Carapacho thermal spa is worth visiting to view the attractive 19th century summer residences. In addition to this, the springs are very popular because of the rich, sulphuric waters, used for therapeutic purposes. In particular the waters are recommended for treatment of rheumatism and skin problems.
