The ancient town of Tentúgal, is approximately 13 km northeast of Montemor-o-Velho on the N 111, in the direction of Coimbra. It is referred to in documents as early as the 10th century and the Mozarab Sisnando Davides, Count of Coimbra was born here in the 11th century. The town has some fine 16th and 18th century patrician houses, the 16th century Misericórdia church and the Nossa Senhora do Mourao church of the former 15th century Carmelite Convent of Our Lady of Nativity. The nuns from this convent have left the legacy of the Tentúgal pastries- queijadas (cheese-cakes) and suspiros (small meringues).
