Situated just 20 kms north of the Spanish border and commanding views to the river Tagus, it is apparent why Castelo Branco was for so long a fortified town and subjected to repeated attacks. The Knights Templar built the 13th century castle, which was damaged in 1640, in the campaign to re-establish Portuguese independence from Castile. The castle was destroyed in the 19th century by the French, under General Junot, when Castelo Branco bore the brunt of the invasion. Gardens have been laid out around the remains and it is now a pleasant and favourite viewpoint.
