The Tejo International Nature Park covers an area of 27,968 hectares (108 square miles) along the Spanish border, between Castelo Branco and Idanha-a-Nova and between the mountains of the Beiras region and the plains of Alenjo. It is an area of spectacular beauty, with steep sided valleys next to the River Tagus and its tributaries the Pônsul, Erges and Aravil. It is renowned for bird watching and there are more than 150 species, including black storks (the park’s emblem), eagles and eagle owls. There are sign-posted routes and fine quality regional products including honey, olive oil, home-made bread and cheeses.
