The defence lines of Tavira were started during the Moorish period between the 8th and 13th centuries on the site of an old Roman fort. After the Christian Reconquest, King Dinis (1261-1325) ordered improvements and integrated Tavira into the national lines of defence. In 1640 maintenance work was carried out. Some sections of the city walls remain, including the medieval Arch of Misericórdia (mercy). From the towers there is an outstanding panoramic view of Tavira and the surrounding countryside.
