The Tapada das Necessidades was originally the garden and park of the 18th century Necessidades Palace built by King João V, now the offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The gardens were redesigned in 1843 and later a circular greenhouse, tennis court and pavilion were built. The latter, known as the Casa do Regalo, was used as a painting studio by Queen Amelia. The tapada, at present occupied by the Forestry commission, is a restoration project but its cactus garden, exotic vegetation, statues, fountain and three ponds Palmeira, Estrelícias and Duque de Lafões, can be seen.
