The Tejo(Tagus) river is the longest in Portugal, being 1,100 km from its source to the estuary mouth close to Lisbon. The vast estuary is an internationally important nature reserve, which lies north of Alcochete and stretches as far as Vila Franca de Xira, covering some 14,192 hectares (about 55 square miles). During the migratory season, more than 120,000 birds, of many different species, visit the sanctuary. The flocks of pink flamingos in particular make a spectacular sight. There are signposted routes and you can visit by foot, bicycle and car, or opt for a trip on one of the traditional boats.
