The Sugar Museum is located on the site of the former residence of a Flemish settler and sugar merchant, João Esmeraldo, a friend of Christopher Columbus. The sugar trade played a crucial role in the establishment of both Funchal and Madeira in the 15th and 16th centuries and the museum is dedicated to recording the history of the production and exportation of this commodity. Amongst the interesting items on display are measuring devices, a copy of a 1572 map of Funchal and the remnants of the 16th century Funchal coat of arms incorporating icons of the sugar industry.
