Opened in 1995, the Stringed Instrument Museum is located about 12 km southwest of Braga. It features the unique collection owned by master craftsman Domingos Machado. The museum concept dates back to the 1960s, when Machado was approached by the eminent ethnologist, Ernesto Veiga de Oliveira, to restore instruments donated to the national museum in Lisbon. On display are Portuguese instruments from the Middle Ages to the present, including guitars, violas, banjos, mandolins and ukuleles. You can also visit the workshops of this great craftsman, recognised by musicologists as a world authority on the building, tuning and repair of stringed instruments.
