St Francisco Xavier is the patron saint of Setubal and this monument was erected on the 21 April 2001 as part of the 500th anniversary celebrations of the Age of Discoveries, following a decision by the Portuguese Episcopal Conference. Designed by sculptor Soares Branco, the monument is 4 metres tall and shows St Francisco Xavier holding a cross, symbolizing missionary zeal. The lower part of the monument has an image of a crab and recalls the miracle attributed the saint, when he calmed a storm in India by casting a crucifix into the sea, which was later retrieved by a crab.
