The monument to Infante dom Henrique (1394-1460) dominates the Praça named after him and is also home to the Stock Excange Palace and the Ferreira Borges market. The third son of King João I, he was instrumental in the discovery of a large part of the world. The monument, erected in 1894, is the work Tomás Costa. It is in sections, with Henry at the top standing next to a globe of the world. At the base there are allegories of victory and faith, whilst the pedestal has reliefs representing the conquest of Ceuta and the Prince at Sagres.
