The greatest Portuguese poet of his generation, Joćo de Deus (also known as Joćo de Deus Nogueira Ramos) was born at San Bartholomeu de Messines in the province of Algarve on the 8th of March 1830. Next to Camoens, no Portuguese poet has been more widely read. He died at Lisbon on the 11th of January 1896 and was given a public funeral. He was buried in the National Pantheon, in the Jeronymite church at Belem, alongside Camoens, Herculano and Garrett. There is a park beside the statue that is also named after him.
