The restored fort of São Vicente lies 3 km north of Torres Vedras and traces of trenches and bastions of defensive lines are still visible. These defences, known as the Lines of Torres Vedras, were built between 1809 and 1812 during the Peninsular Wars to defend Lisbon from the French. St Vincent’s Fort was one of the key points of the 152 fortifications; it alone housed 2,000 men and had 39 cannons. Constructed on the orders of Arthur Wellesley, later the Duke of Wellington, the Lines were a key factor in the eventual defeat of the French.
