This monument is dedicated to one of Albufeira’s famous sons. Saint Vicente was born in 1590 in the Town of Albufeira, but journeyed far from home to preach his faith, finally dying for his beliefs in Japan. His mother dedicated him to Our Lady of Orada at his baptism and, after the death of his parents, he joined the priesthood. He later travelled to Mexico, where he was accepted into the Order of Santo Agostinho. After many difficulties he fulfilled his dream, which was to preach the Christian faith in Japan. Imprisoned for two years and tortured to give up his Christian beliefs, he refused to recant and was burned at the stake. He died on September 3rd 1632 calling out: "Long live the Faith of Jesus Christ."
