The present marble Santa Estevão church in Alfama was built in 1733 on the foundations of a 12th/13th century church, one of the oldest in Lisbon. Designed by José da Costa Negreiros, it stands on a steep slope, overlooking the spacious square, and has a north to south orientation. Partially rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, it is richly decorated internally with 18th century azulejo tiles; the carved and gilded high altar is the work of sculptor José de Almeida. From the southwest corner of the square there is a fine view of Alfama.
