The town of Vila Fresca de Azeitão is in the Serra da Arrábida, about 19kms west of Setubal. The Santiago Order (The Military Order of Saint James of the Sword), founded the church of São Simão in the 12th century. Today’s building is from 1570 and its attraction, in particular, is the fine 16th century image of Nossa Senhora da Saúde (Our Lady of Health) and another of St Simon, these have been dressed in interesting costumes. The church is decorated with 17th century tiled panels and that of St John the Baptist is most impressive.
