This star-shaped fort, situated 1 km southwest of Setubal, was built about 1600 by Philip II of Spain during the period of Spanish rule. Built for protection against English invaders and pirates, it was also used to keep an eye on the locals. It was designed by the Italian Filipe Terzi and completed after his death by Leonardo Torreano. Inside the fort was the Governor’s residence, now a pousada. There is a tiny chapel, tiled with scenes from the life of São Filipe by Policarpo de Oliveira Bernardes. The terrace offers great views over the city, the Tróia peninsula and the Sado estuary.
