Located in the town square is the Igreja de São Pedro, the mother church of Palmela, notable for its fine 18th century tile panels depicting scenes from the life of St Peter. The church dates from the 16th century, but has an 18th century post earthquake entrance and twin bell towers. The architect was António Rodrigues who was also responsible for the Santa Maria da Graça church in Setubal, which is built in similar Mannerist style. Whilst in the area notice the interesting 17th century town hall opposite.
