St Peter’s Church is the largest and most imposing church in Peniche and is located in the heart of the town’s historic centre. It was built in the late 16th century and the Baroque chancel of the central nave, which is dedicated to St Peter, is decorated with outstanding carved and gilt woodwork. There are also important 18th century paintings depicting scenes from the life of the patron saint. There are a number of other altars devoted to saints such as, appropriately, Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem (Our Lady of Safe Voyage).
