The original São Pedro church was commissioned in 1737 and was built in a modest manner alongside the existing houses, which were the property of the Fraternity of St. Peter. In 1782 authorisation was given to rebuild and enlarge the church. The new design, which was subject to approval by the Lisbon Architects Association, entailed the demolition of the fraternity houses to allow construction of the new façade. Work did not commence until 1881 and, although finished in the early 20th century, the project was never completed in its entirety.
