The 15th century Igreja de São Pedro is located centrally in the Praça Luís de Camões and contains the tomb of one of its greatest sons Danião de Góis (1501-74), who was born and died in Alenquer. Humanist and writer, de Góis travelled extensively and was a student and a friend of Erasmus, he also had contact with Martin Luther and his associate Philipp Melanchthon. Amongst his best known works is a detailed life of King Manuel I. Given his connections and honesty he was inevitably subject to investigation by the Inquisition and died in mysterious circumstances.
