The Ermida de São Pedro das Cabeças is southeast of Castro Verde, on the site where the historical is supposed to have been fought. Apparently it is here that King Afonso Henriques defeated the armies of five Moorish kingdoms in a bloody battle. A later monarch, King Sebastian, ordered the construction of the chapel to pay homage to the courage of the first Portuguese monarch. Dating from the 16th century, the chapel is an example of Mannerist religious architecture. The Baroque style is most apparent in the bell tower and wall paintings. It was once a place of pilgrimage.
