Considered one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Portugal, the 13th century Igreja de São Pedro de Rates is located approximately 11km northeast of Póvoa de Varzim. It is believed that Pedro of Rates was one the first Christian converts in the Iberian Peninsula and was appointed the first Bishop of Braga; he became a martyr and was buried here. The church has a beautiful rose window and fine sculpted statues of saints over the portal.
