The St Lawrence Palace was built in the first half of the 16th century as Funchal’s first fort, but only the typically Manueline tower on the east side was initially built. This easily succumbed to French pirates in 1566. Much extended and altered, it gradually became a residential palace and is one of the best preserved Portuguese 16th/17th century fortifications. Classified as a National Monument in 1943, it is now used as an official residence for the Prime Minister of Madeira and also houses the Military Command. There is a permanent exhibition relating the history and development of the building.
