The Torre de São Lourenço, also known as the Torre do Bugio, consists of a fort and lighthouse situated on a small rock at the mouth of the Tagus River estuary. Classified as a building of public interest, the stone fort was built in the 16th century and is a good example of a round Renaissance fortress. It was designed by Giovanni Casale and work started on the tower shortly after 1586. The 14 metre high lighthouse was installed in 1775 and automated in 1981.
