About 20 kms west of Setubal in the Serra da Arrábida is the town of Vila Nogueira de Azeitão and its interesting 16th century church of São Lourenço. The exterior is plain, but the interior has a variety of tiled panels, including some remaining from the 16th century. The church’s patron saint is commemorated by two 17th century panels depicting scenes from his life and there are 18th century panels with scenes from the Old Testament. The main altar is in multi-coloured local marble with 17th century gilt woodwork and a painting of the Last Supper. Note the 16th century font.
