São Julião church in the Praça de Bocage was originally built in the 13th century and then rebuilt between 1513 and 1520 in Manueline style. Struck by earthquake in 1531 and repaired, it was again severely damaged by the 1755 earthquake and rebuilt in late Baroque style. The main and side portals remain from the Manueline building. The impressive gilt work to the interior was paid for by the fishermen of Setubal. The blue and white azulejo panels to the sidewalls depict scenes from the lives of Saints Julian and Basilissa, and the painting over the altar is by Pedro Alexandrino.
