The 15th century church of St John the Baptista was built by King Manuel I and stands in Tomar’s main square, the Praça da República. It is distinguished by its fine Manueline portal and octagonal spire. Inside there is a carved stone pulpit and 16th century paintings, which include a Last Supper by Gregório Lopes (1490-1550) and a particularly gruesome Beheading of John the Baptist (also attributed to Lopes). Other noteworthy features are black and white diamond mosaics and the white and gold Baroque altar.
